The story follows Millie, a woman navigating the heavy weight of family complexities and a sudden mental health crisis at home. Accompanied by her two loyal dogs, she leaves her Appalachian hometown on a journey from East Coast to West Coast to process grief and reclaim her own story.

Through her journey, discussion topics or book readings may include themes of mental health, women’s health, postpartum depression, and the healing power of travel, nature, and new cultural experiences. Ultimately, it highlights the profound importance of nature connection for collective and intergenerational well-being, systemic failures within our healthcare system, and the urgent need for protecting our public lands.

Alicia M. Bynum, born and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, published her debut novel in 2026, Rivers and Roads, through Mountain Girl Press. She is an active regional writer who has published widely on Appalachian public lands and advocacy, outdoor recreation, and travel.
