SUMMARY:Listen up Book Club: May read-aloud
DESCRIPTION:The May readaloud event for the Listen Up Book Club – Join us at the amazing cozy Philosopher’s House for a fresh readaloud (May’s selection is The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White – a novel I’ve never read before but is much-treasured by many)! \nJoin us for this read-aloud book club at the awesome Philosopher’s House! For this read-aloud book club\, no one has to read anything in advance\, and there’s nothing to prep – just show up as you are\, grab a snack or tea at the counter\, and enjoy the weirdly wholesome community of a read aloud. I read the first part of a “classic novel” aloud for the group (one I’ve never read before!) – this would be perfect for listener crafts\, mending clothes\, or coloring books – but there will also be socializing before and after\, and of course LITERATURE DISCUSSION (if you like). \nHow to register: Drop-in (feel free to bring a portable craft project\, textile project\, or?? to work on during this meetup) \nLocation: Living room/Fireplace\, 1st floor \nCost: 5.00 donation to teahouse nonprofit OR food/beverage purchase. All are welcome regardless of ability to donate/purchase. \nOrganizer: Emily Katt at Emilyskatt@gmail.com \n\n \nFollow/join the Listen Up Book Club page on FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61585915229733

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: Filmmaker Missy Bell
DESCRIPTION:*Fireside Chats sponsored by Carson and Paige McSailor*\n\nMissy Bell is a filmmaker based in Asheville\, NC making films about people who are ready to step off the ledge – maybe to fall. Maybe to fly! She’s been directing and coaching actors since 1999 and making movies since 2018. Her most recent project is also her debut feature film\, Erased\, a tender-hearted drama about a man forced to stop running from his past and ultimately\, himself. Over the years she has made numerous short films\, all with an element of enchantment. Her life and work both reflect the power of community\, magic\, and keeping your eyes open to beauty. When she isn’t making movies\, she enjoys mentoring and teaching others\, kayaking\, coffee on the porch\, one-on-one conversations\, and eating potatoes. \nAt this event\, Missy will screen two of her most recent short films: Opprobrium – a dark tale of a woman trapped inside her fear of losing her youthful beauty\, and Medication – a femme noir ghost story about a PhD student forced to face her physical shortcomings in order to solve a mystery. She’ll discuss how these films came to be\, her process\, and answer your questions about the films and the making of them. \nHow to register: Drop-in \nCost: Food/beverage purchases encouraged \nLocation: Fireplace/Living Room\, 1st floor \nYou can follow Missy and her work at: https://www.facebook.com/missybellarts \nor on her website: https://www.missybell.com

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: Artist Jai Gervin
DESCRIPTION:*Sponsored by Carson and Paige McSailor*\n\nJai Gervin\nMixed Media Artist\n“I am a “creative visionary” with the soul of an artist and the heart of a Social Worker. I was born\, raised\, and still live in Johnson City\, TN. I believe that this small\, typically conservative\, town forced me to find alternative creative outlets even as a child. As I grew up\, my artistic nature was not valued in my family\, so I didn’t tap in to my creative side for many years.\n     During the pandemic I began to desire to create again this time as an adult with no rules or lines to color within. You will find that my art is much deeper than the first glance. It reflects life experiences\, inspirations\, emotions and stories I have fabricated along the way. I tend to create pieces that are personal to me and relatable to others. I find the most joy working with mixed media by combining ordinary things with other mediums that don’t traditionally “fit” together; much like me. I have found great joy and healing via this avenue and am excited to be able to share it with folks that appreciate it and find their own joy through my lens.”\n\nCost: Food/drink purchases encouraged to support teahouse nonprofit\n\nLocation: Fireplace/Living room\, 1st floor\nArtist Statement: For me\, art is both therapeutic and fascinating. I’ve always been\nintrigued in how two or more people can look at the same piece yet interpret it\ndifferently.    I am no stranger to thinking outside of the box and creating art that sparks conversations. My art follows no rules. It is bold\, vibrant\, thought provoking\, diverse\, distorted and interesting. I create original one-time pieces that are never duplicated.\n\nFor more about Jai’s art: https://jgervin.com
