SUMMARY:Intro to Storytelling (registration required\, 4-week series)
DESCRIPTION:Intro to Storytelling (4-Week Series)\nWhether you tell stories on stage\, on the page\, or somewhere in between\, this four-week introductory storytelling series offers a welcoming space to develop your voice and craft. Designed for oral storytellers and writers alike\, the class explores storytelling as both an art and a practice. While this class is introductory\, it is open to all levels and can be scaled to offer more challenge for experienced story crafters. \nEach week focuses on a core element of storytelling: plot structure\, smooth and meaningful transitions\, generating compelling story ideas\, and identifying the stories that only youare meant to tell. Through guided exercises and writing prompts\, group discussion\, and low-pressure sharing\, participants will build tools they can return to again and again—no memorization or performance experience required. \nCome with a notebook\, your favorite writing utensil\, and curiosity. \nYou are already a storyteller\, let’s explore and expand our voices together! \nCost: $40 (for 4-week series) \nHow to register: email Vianna Isbister at isbisterv13@gmail.com to reserve your spot \nLocation: Drawing Room\, second floor \nAbout the organizer: \nVianna Isbister is a dynamic multi-hyphenate performer and teacher with a B.A. in Theatre and an M.A. in Communication and Storytelling Studies. In addition to teaching at various universities\, Vianna has taught over 1000 movement and aerial classes over the course of 4 years. Her work bridges the gap between the spoken and the unspoken\, blending performance art with academic insights to craft narratives that resonate. Her work has been featured at the 2025 National Storytelling Network Conference and as author of a book chapter in Memorial Art in Rhetorical Discourse in 2026. She has performed with Night Owl Circus Arts (NOCA)\, East Tennessee State University (ETSU)\, Jonesborough Storytellers Guild (JSG)\, and online with Artists Standing Strong Together (ASST) to name a few. She is passionate about supporting people in aligning with their bodies and uncovering practical and creative ways to deepen their connection to self.

SUMMARY:Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:What is a climate cafe? Climate-minded friends & neighbors who come together to share what’s important and to build a stronger\, safer world for us all! Climate Cafe occurs on the 2nd Tuesday monthly. \nLocation: Classroom/meditation space\, 2nd floor \nCost: Free. Food and drink purchases encouraged. \nHow to register: Drop-in. Registration form available to fill out upon arrival. \nInstructor Contact Information: Chelsea Green\, chelseagreencmi@gmail.com\nwww.anubeginningtherapy.com \nToo often\, our grief & anxiety around climate change lacks the community awareness\, support\, and rituals that would help us build resiliency. Now more than ever\, we need places & spaces to share our ideas\, our concerns\, our fears\, and our dreams. Gathering for these conversations helps us tap into a bigger network of support\, like the trees & mycelium share resources in their underground networks. \nClimate Cafes are free 90-minute gatherings welcome to all because we know that when we engage in meaningful conversation and action in the context of a community\, we grow our capacity to serve something bigger than ourselves. The Climate Cafe’s goal is to get more people together\, in more places\, talking about climate change in a supportive and welcoming space. \nThis event takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Philosopher’s House in Johnson City\, Tennessee and is facilitated by Registered Climate Therapist\, Chelsea Green\, MA\, LPC\, CPA-NA. \nBeing human has always involved persisting through danger and uncertainty. By embracing our love for nature\, for all plants and animals\, and for humanity\, even in the face of great loss and pain our grief can empower us to fight for a better future for all.

She has performed with Night Owl Circus Arts (NOCA)\, East Tennessee State University (ETSU)\, Jonesborough Storytellers Guild (JSG)\, and online with Artists Standing Strong Together (ASST) to name a few. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading and Book Launch with Molly Ann McDonough and Kayla Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Emerging writers Molly Ann McDonough and Kayla Nichols will launch their debut poetry collections on International Women’s Day at a special poetry reading and open mic event focusing on femininity at The Philosopher’s House in Johnson City.\nMcDonough’s “Hope in Hateful Times” leans into familial tenderness\, local belonging\, and global class solidarity while Nichols’ “The Stuff of Stars” is rooted in queer Appalachian identity and community cultivation. Both collections center themes of feminism\, mythology\, resilience\, reclamation\, and the urgent tenderness of building community in difficult times. \nHow to register: Drop-in \nLocation: FIreplace/Living room\, 1st floor \nCost: Food/drink purchases encouraged OR donation to teahouse nonprofit. Authors will have books available for purchase. \nMolly and Kayla met in 2024 at The Philosopher’s House and quickly began collaborating on their shared interests of poetry and fiction writing. Both poets struggled to find a place for their direct\, often blunt\, work in the established world of literary poetry publishing\, and thus decided to carve out their own place at the table by self-publishing their work alongside one another. \nHope in Hateful Times and The Stuff of Stars share many themes and center similar values\, but each have a defined and unique poetic style. McDonough often employs complex rhyme and meter schemes that ferry the reader through stunning emotional depth. Nichols’ stripped down free verse leans on metaphor and introspection to convey rich emotion and imagery. The poets’ intertwined themes and unique styles come into perfect focus in their braided poem\, MAIDENMOTHERCRONE\, published in both collections\, which explores feminine archetypes by juxtaposing the patriarchy’s lens with individual reclamation. \nThis reading will include an open mic (sign ups for which will open 15 minutes before the event starts\, so please come early to sign up!)\, as well as readings by special guests:\n– Sarah Jane Gilliam\n– Lydia Gwyn\n– Rita Spalding\n– Rachel Throp \nReaders will have books available for purchase. This is a free event open to the public\, but donations to the teahouse are strongly encouraged.
